Malaria is
probably the only infection that can be treated in just three days, yet that kills
millions every year. Without prompt and appropriate treatment, malaria
may become a medical emergency by rapidly progressing to
complications and death. Most cases of severe malaria are
caused by P. falciparum infection. Rarely, P. vivax or
P. ovale produce serious complications, debilitating
relapses, and even death. One can also come across
problems related to the use of antimalarial drugs. Malaria can also aggravate certain
pre-existing illnesses and may even prove fatal for patients with end stage organ disease.
