New research
into the genetic diversity of Plasmodium falciparum indicates that making an effective malaria vaccine may be even more
difficult than scientists had thought. Three studies published online in Nature Genetics
(10 December) reveal that there are many
more variations in the malaria genome than were previously recognised. One paper, funded in part by the National Institute of Allergy and
Infectious Diseases (NIAID), reports that the study has revealed nearly 47,000
genetic variations in the parasite's genome.
